F.A.Q.s

  • Blender Version?
Recommended version is Blender 4.5 and above. Older version with EEVEE NEXT is supported. But users will miss out the performance boost in blender 4.5 LTS
  • Render Engine?
EEVEE is highly recommended. EEVEE next to be more specific. Cycles support is included as well. But it will very GPU heavy.
  • Does it Come with Scattering System?
No. It is only an asset library. You are encouraged to use 3rd party scatterer addons. Recommended addons are Geo Scatter or GScatter and Bagapie
  • Do the assets contains animation presets?
No. Instead I provided free WindFX addon which lets you to make your own foliage animations.
  • Can they be exported to game engines like Unity/Unreal?
In short, no. Because most assets are using procedural shaders and blender's internal node setups. Some assets do come with hand-painted textures. They have better chance with exporting for game engines. Still you would need to set up your own shaders with the textures inside the game engine. Hence it isn't recommended for users whose primary goal is exporting to game dev

In this course we will explore the world of 3d paintings and de mystify it slowly. The ultimate goal of this course is to develop some basic understanding about painting fundamentals and how to apply them in 3d space. It will enable one to revitalize any kind of paintings into 3d space and make flawless rendition of them. Because the rest is easy and can be done creatively once you understand the underlying principle and know how to apply them in another dimension.

The main tool of 3d-fying a painting according to this course is still painting. So you are not actually escaping the painting part here even though you are stepping into a greater dimension and picking up more advanced tools like Blender. So this course is constantly revolving around texture paint mode of Blender which lets us to hand paint 3d meshes. Hence whether you want to learn more about blender’s internal texture painting mode or just want to learn about my process of making 3d renditions of paintings, this course is a good fit for both kinds. Because the same principles and tools can serve both purposes.

Apart from those who wish to 3d fy paintings, this course is a great fit for surfacing artists who wish to learn about stylized or painterly texturing for game assets. I still find painterly texturing to be the most straight forward method of achieving convincing painterly looks in games. And the lessons are definitely influenced by my experience from working for games and making painterly environments and assets.

Apart from extensive introduction to texture painting in Blender, this course contains two main workouts to train you to tackle most types of paintings or illustrations we usually see. You will see the steps of modeling the scenes of reference in 3d. You will learn about efficient modeling techniques aimed for simplicity. UV mapping is discussed in great length too. The main task is hand painting our assets. Where we will discuss some tools to facilitate our painting experience. Shader editor can help us to get certain kinds of edgeworks. Such techniques are discussed in great length in the 3rd chapter. And last not the least we will also do a bit of compositing to push painterly look further.

My good friend Francisco and  contemporary Master artist Noah have been the greatest help in developing this course. I had the pleasure of breaking down the beauty of their works and explaining how to get something close in 3d.

Francisco’s tree stump illustration.

Noah Verrier’s tea and toast painting

But many may actually find this thing about hand-painting in blender kind of daunting. This is how I came to develop this course and worked to reveal the rather nice side of this mode of Blender. I love it for its simplicity. But we can even level it up to handle more complex tasks.  Apart from getting familiar with hand paint texturing workflow you will also learn about brush mechanism of blender. It will help you to develop your own texturing tools and make the process stress free.

 About the instructor

I am a hobbyist 3d environment artist. My professional service leans more toward surfacing. I worked on a few un announced games and animation projects in last three years as a texture artist.

Apart from that my driving force as a 3d artist comes from my passion about art and paintings. Which is why I have been making 3d paintings all this time and exploring different techniques till this day. But my main technique is hardly any secret. I just prefer to hand paint 3d scenes in Blender. And this is what this course is all about.
